Today, as small business owners, the demand for our time, energy and money are greater than ever.
Meetings, employees, sales, marketing, advertising, budgets, the list is endless.
We are pulled in a dozen different ways everyday.
There never seems to be enough hours in the day or enough days in the week!
But, we do have to come to terms with many things that are extremely important to our business.
What is the single most important ingredient, the glue that holds it all together, the main gear that drives all the other gears.
Well, here it is. The answer…you are.
Think about this, how much would your business suffer if you went down with a serious health issue?
Obviously, there are some things that are unavoidable and out of our control. But your health, you as the person who owns and operates, directs, decides whats-what, how important is your health?
It is as important as your budget, your SBA loan, your marketing or anything else for that matter.
For many of us small business owners, we are the business. Without you, there is no business, no company. Zero-nada-zilch.
So the old question comes up again: How do I find the time?
Well in this case, don’t find the time. You have to make the time.
Tell me if this sounds like you on a typical day.
Breakfast – coffee
Lunch – something quick, fast food stop or restaurant
Supper – maybe, your only decent meal of the day
Our health is a critical part of not only the small business owner for his or her business but life in general.
When you feel good and look your best, it shows. People respond to that.
Feeling great puts you at your best and today you need to be at your best everyday of every week. When you are not tired, you think with more clarity and better decisions are accomplished.
Like many aspects of our business we need to have our goals, actions items, agendas all done within a time specific window. We may not always meet the time table but it’s important to have time serve as a reminder that it needs to be done by a certain time.
Your health should not follow a different set of criteria. Statistically, people have their cars checked and maintained more regularly than their own bodies.
Sad but true.
If you are one that is out of shape and have put on a few pounds over the years, don’t panic. Any time is a good time to get healthy, but sooner is better.
Remember, everything has a starting point and a process to follow just like your business did.
First, see your doctor annually and speak to him about health concerns or issues. Get blood work done, know your scores, stress test, and a good check up.
Many people I know have all but put medications aside from high blood pressure to diabetes all because they began to eat healthy and exercise. Plus the energy boost from the change, feeling better and performing better are all positive outcomes of being healthy and exercise.
Initially starting out may be a 30 minute walk once a day or eliminating fast foods or fried restaurant foods from your diet.
Remember, it took some time to get out of shape, so it will take some time to get back into shape. Like with our business early on, be patient.
Getting in shape and being healthy will test you at the beginning, but when you get there and start to like who you see again and you sleep better, have more energy, don’t get the afternoon slugs, you can push through your day.
This is an addictive feeling and one you will not want to go ways.
If you are one who feels you are in pretty good shape because your weight is in control, don’t be fooled. As we age our body loses muscle mass and is replaced by body fat. Being thin doesn’t necessarily mean being healthy.
Plus we make look good outside but how are we internally.
Cardio exercise is a major part of being healthy. It helps maintain good body weight and can fight high blood pressure and diabetes among a host of other benefits. Plus your heart is a muscle to and it will love the workout form cardiovascular activity and perspiring helps cleanse the body from toxins.
Now let’s add some resistance weight training to maintain that muscle mass and help maintain good bone density.
It sounds a bit much and it is, but starting will be the toughest. You reach a point where the good feeling is so overwhelming you won’t want to miss the gym time or eat a donut.
Speaking of that donut, diet is as big as your workout time. One of the things that will really help you is something you already do with your business. You have to be disciplined.
I love to eat, who doesn’t. But the problem is not only wrong food choices but overindulgence. Pizza, wings, deserts are OK in moderation. The problem is if that is our eating life style, you will need to change and have patience.
A good way to start is by having a cheat day. Mine is Friday, its pizza day and has been like that for a long time. I get my fix and back to making good food choices. Plus you know cheat day is coming so it is easier to deal with.
With portions, your fist size is a good rule of thumb on portion size for your servings. Also try to eat more frequently through the day. Eat healthy snacks in between breakfast, lunch and dinner so you are not as hungry. Also studies have proven that resting a bit after a first helping and allowing the brain to register with the food you just ate usually tells you that you are full.
So like in your business you have to educate yourself on a healthy lifestyle and be patient.
Two great resources I use with getting their newsletters are Men’s Health and Dr. Mercola.com
They have so much information about foods, supplements, the best restaurant choices and what the supermarket labels do not tell you.
Lastly, I just want to touch on using supplements. As we age our bodies get deficient. It hard to get everything we need from food alone. My suggestion is to supplement. Again this is an education process with so many choices and much marketing hype on product. Use the resources I suggested.
As with your decision and your journey to start your business, the journey to be and stay healthy will have many rewards and you’ll be glad of your decision again.
